There's no single magic number — the right count depends on your entry points, blind spots and what you want to protect. But here's a simple way to work it out.
Start with the entry points
Every door, gate and ground-floor window is a potential entry. At minimum you want a camera covering each main entrance. For most homes that's the front gate, the main door and the back/side access.
Cover the valuables and blind spots
Next, think about where the things worth protecting are — the cash counter in a shop, the parking area, the staircase, the store-room. Add a camera for each area you'd want to review footage of later.
Typical numbers
- Small home / flat: 2–4 cameras (entrance, balcony/back, living area or parking).
- Independent house: 4–6 cameras (gate, main door, both sides, terrace).
- Shop: 2–4 cameras (entrance, counter, aisle, back).
- Office / showroom: 6–8+ cameras (reception, work areas, server/store room, exits).
Resolution matters too
Sometimes the answer isn't more cameras but better ones. A single high-resolution camera with a wide view can replace two low-resolution ones. IP cameras are great where detail matters.
