One of the best things about modern CCTV is that you can check your home or shop from your phone, even when you are far away. Setting up mobile viewing is simple once you know the steps.
What you need first
To watch cameras remotely you need three things working together:
- Your DVR or NVR connected to a working internet router
- The correct mobile app for your camera brand
- The device ID or QR code from your recorder
If any of these is missing, live viewing from outside your home will not work.
Step 1: install the right app
Each brand has its own free app. For example, Hikvision uses Hik-Connect and CP Plus uses gCMOB or similar. Download the app that matches your recorder from the Play Store or App Store. Using the wrong app is the most common reason setup fails.
Step 2: add your recorder
Open the app, create an account, and choose Add Device. Most recorders show a QR code on the monitor; just scan it with the app. Otherwise you can type the device serial number by hand. Set a strong password so no one else can access your cameras.
Step 3: test live and playback
Once added, tap the device to see all cameras live. Try switching to playback to view old footage by date and time. Test it once on Wi-Fi and once on mobile data to confirm it works away from home.
Common pitfalls
- Slow or no internet at the recorder end
- Wrong app or outdated app version
- Recorder not connected to the router by LAN cable
- Forgotten password or device locked
Sometimes viewing works fine for months and then suddenly stops. Usually the internet at home went down, the router was changed, or the broadband plan lapsed. If you get a new router or change provider, the recorder may need to be reconnected to the network, and a power cut that restarts the router can take a few minutes before viewing comes back. It is also worth keeping the app updated, as an old version can simply stop connecting until you update it from the store.
