A camera that records beautifully by day but turns to mush after dark isn't protecting you when it matters most. Since most incidents happen at night, night vision deserves more attention than the megapixel figure on the box.
Infrared (IR) night vision
IR cameras use infrared LEDs to see in complete darkness, producing a clear black-and-white image. They are reliable and affordable, and the IR range (how far the camera can see) is the key spec to match to your site. A camera with short range mounted to watch a long boundary will leave the far end dark, so size the range to the actual distance.
Full-colour night vision
Newer cameras (often called ColorVu or similar) use larger sensors and ambient or built-in white light to record in colour at night. Colour footage makes it far easier to identify clothing, vehicles and faces.
Which should you choose?
- IR — great value for gates, boundaries and dark areas where you need a clear record.
- Full-colour — worth it for entrances and shopfronts where identifying detail matters.
Common problems to check first
If footage looks poor after dark, run through this checklist before assuming the camera has failed:
- Glare or white-out — the IR is bouncing off a nearby wall, glass or the housing; reposition the camera.
- Cobwebs and dust on the lens trigger the IR and wash out the picture; wipe the front gently.
- Stuck in day mode — a faulty light sensor means the image never switches to night.
- Dim or dead IR LEDs after a few years, leaving the scene too dark.
When to call a professional
A wipe-down or slight re-angle you can manage yourself. But flickering night mode, failed IR LEDs or a camera that has stopped switching usually points to a hardware fault. We offer a free in-store diagnosis, and on-site visits carry a ₹500 charge that is adjusted into the bill once you go ahead. A survey also pins down the right night-vision type for each spot.
