Inkjet vs Laser Printer: Which Should You Buy?

Inkjet or laser printer? Compare running costs, print quality, home vs office use and maintenance to help you pick the right printer for you.

Choosing between an inkjet and a laser printer comes down to how you actually print. Both are good machines, but they suit very different needs. Here is a clear comparison to help you decide.

How they work

An inkjet sprays liquid ink onto the page and is great for colour and photos. A laser printer uses toner powder and heat, which makes it fast and sharp for text. That basic difference shapes everything else.

Running costs

This is where most people get caught out. The printer price is only part of the story, the real cost is in refills.

  • Inkjet: cheaper to buy, but ink can be costly per page. A modern ink-tank model fixes this and is very economical if you print a lot.
  • Laser: higher upfront cost, but toner lasts for thousands of pages, so the cost per page is low for heavy text printing.

Best for home use

If you print occasionally, a few documents, the kids' projects, the odd photo, an inkjet or ink-tank printer is usually the better fit. It handles colour well and costs less to buy. Just remember that inkjets can dry out if left unused for weeks, so print something now and then to keep the nozzles healthy.

Best for office use

For an office or shop that prints stacks of invoices, reports and letters every day, a laser printer wins. It is faster, the text is crisp, and toner works out cheaper over high volumes. If you rarely need colour, a monochrome laser is a reliable workhorse.

Speed, quality and maintenance

For everyday text, a laser prints faster and the letters stay crisp without any smudging, which matters when you are running off pages in bulk. An inkjet is slower but shines with colour, photos and graphics look richer and more natural, so if you print presentations or photo prints at home, its colour handling is hard to beat. On upkeep, inkjets need a little more attention, occasional head cleaning and the risk of clogged nozzles if the printer sits idle for weeks. Lasers are generally low-maintenance but heavier and pricier to repair if a major part fails. Whichever you choose, use genuine cartridges where possible, as poor-quality refills and cheap third-party ink cause many of the faults we see in our workshop.
