If your iPhone barely lasts the day, you are not alone. Battery drain has a few common causes, and most can be improved with a quick check of your settings and battery health.
Check your battery health first
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and look at the Maximum Capacity figure. This tells you how much of the original capacity remains:
- Above 85% is generally healthy.
- Around 80% is where you start noticing shorter battery life.
- Below 80%, or if you see a "Service" message, the battery is worn and a replacement is the real fix.
No setting change can restore a worn-out battery, so this figure is the most important clue.
Adjust the settings that drain power
If your battery health is still good, a few settings often make a big difference:
- Turn on Low Power Mode when you need the charge to last longer.
- Check Battery settings to see which apps use the most power and limit the worst offenders.
- Turn off Background App Refresh for apps you do not need updating constantly.
- Lower screen brightness or enable Auto-Brightness.
- Disable location access for apps that do not truly need it.
Watch for heat and updates
Heat is hard on batteries. Avoid leaving your iPhone in a hot car or in direct sun, and remove thick cases while charging if the phone gets very warm. Keeping iOS updated also helps, as Apple regularly fixes battery-related bugs.
If the drain started suddenly after an update, give it a day or two, the phone often re-indexes in the background and settles down.
When to replace the battery
If your Maximum Capacity is low, the phone shuts down unexpectedly, or it gets hot and drains even when idle, it is time for a battery replacement. A fresh battery can make an older iPhone feel new again.
