A laptop that shows "plugged in, not charging" is frustrating, but the cause is usually one of a few things. Working through them in order — charger, then battery, then charging port — saves you an unnecessary trip.
Common causes
- Worn-out battery — older batteries lose the ability to hold or accept charge after a few hundred cycles.
- Faulty charger or cable — a frayed cable, bent pin or failing adapter brick is a frequent culprit.
- Loose or damaged charging port (DC jack) — common after years of plugging in, or a cable yanked at an angle.
- Charging circuit fault on the motherboard, often after a power surge or liquid exposure.
- Software or driver glitch — sometimes a battery driver reset gets things moving again.
Quick checks to do first
- Try a different charger of the correct wattage, or test yours on another laptop.
- Inspect the port for wobble, dust or debris, and feel whether the adapter brick is unusually hot.
- Open your battery health report to check the cycle count and condition.
- Shut down fully, unplug, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then reconnect and restart.
If the charger is fine and the port feels loose, it is more likely a DC jack or board issue than the battery.
Warning signs not to ignore
Switch the laptop off if you notice a swollen or bulging battery, a burning smell, or scorching around the port. A swelling battery is a safety risk and should be replaced promptly, not charged.
