A MacBook that refuses to turn on is worrying, but the cause is often something simple. Before assuming the worst, work through these checks one by one.
Start with power and charging
Many "dead" MacBooks are simply out of charge or have a faulty charging setup. Try the following:
- Plug in the original Apple charger and leave it connected for at least 15-20 minutes before testing.
- Check the cable and adapter for fraying, bent pins or a loose fit.
- Try a different wall socket to rule out a dead point.
- Look for a charging light or sound when you connect power.
If nothing lights up at all, the issue may be the charger, the charging port, or the board, rather than the laptop being truly dead.
Do a hard restart and reset the SMC
Sometimes the Mac is on but the screen stays black. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds, release, then press it again to start up. On Macs with a T2 chip or Apple Silicon, simply hold the power button until you see the startup options.
On older Intel MacBooks, resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) can fix power and charging glitches. Shut down, hold Shift + Control + Option and the power button together for 10 seconds, release, then power on normally.
Is it the display or the board?
To tell a screen problem from a logic board problem, listen and feel for signs of life:
- Do you hear the fan or startup chime?
- Does the keyboard backlight come on?
- Shine a torch at an angle on the screen, a very faint image means the panel works but the backlight has failed.
If there are signs of power but no picture, the display, backlight or cable is the likely culprit. No signs of life at all usually points to a power or logic board fault, which needs proper diagnosis.
When to bring it in
Book a repair if your MacBook was dropped, exposed to liquid, smells burnt, or shows no response after charging and a hard restart. These need component-level testing rather than guesswork at home.
