MacBook Screen Flickering? Causes & Fixes

A flickering MacBook screen can be caused by anything from a small software glitch to a hardware fault. Here is how to narrow down what is going on.

Rule out software first

Software issues are the easiest to fix, so start here:

• Restart the MacBook, a simple reboot clears many temporary display glitches.
• Install any pending macOS updates, as flickering is sometimes a known bug fixed in a later version.
• Turn off Automatic Graphics Switching in Battery settings on Intel Macs to see if it helps.
• Boot into Safe Mode to check whether a third-party app is the cause.

If the flickering disappears in Safe Mode, the problem is almost certainly software and not the screen itself.

Check the display cable and hinge

If the flicker appears or worsens when you open, close or tilt the lid, the display flex cable running through the hinge may be worn or loose. This is a common issue on MacBooks that have been opened and closed thousands of times.

Lines, flashing or sections of the screen cutting out as you move the lid are classic signs of a cable problem. This usually needs a technician, as the cable sits inside the display assembly.

When the GPU or panel is failing

Persistent flickering, strange colours, scrambled patterns or horizontal lines that show up even on the boot screen often point to a graphics (GPU) or panel fault. Certain MacBook Pro models have had known GPU issues over the years.

A quick test: connect your MacBook to an external monitor. If the external display is perfectly clean but the built-in screen still flickers, the problem is the internal panel or cable. If both screens flicker, the GPU or logic board is more likely involved.
