Water-Damaged Phone? Do These 6 Things Immediately

Liquid damage is recoverable surprisingly often, but only if you act fast and avoid the common mistakes. Whether it is a splash, a tea spill or a full drop, the real enemy is corrosion — and it starts the moment the board gets wet, not when you finally notice a problem.

Do these six things immediately

• Switch it off straight away and do not press any buttons. Power flowing through a wet board is what causes lasting damage.
• Dry the outside with a soft cloth and gently remove the case and SIM tray.
• Keep it upright and still so liquid does not travel deeper; do not shake or blow into the ports.
• Do not charge it until it has been opened and checked, because electricity plus moisture causes shorts.
• Skip the rice myth entirely. Rice cannot reach the board, and dust can make things worse.
• Get it opened, cleaned and treated professionally as soon as you can, ideally the same day.

What to check first

Note what the phone fell into. Salt water, fizzy drinks and dirty water are far more corrosive than clean tap water. Look for fogging under the camera glass.

Warning signs to watch for

• Screen flickering, dark patches or unresponsive touch.
• Muffled or crackling speaker and microphone.
• Refusing to charge, or heating up while plugged in.
• Random restarts, or not switching on at all.
