Most repairs never touch your personal files, but a backup before any service is sensible insurance against the unexpected. Please remember that data backup remains the customer's responsibility, so take a few minutes to copy what matters before you hand over any device.
Why back up first
Even a simple screen or battery job can require a device reset, and a drive can fail without warning during diagnosis. A current backup means you never have to gamble with photos, documents or work files.
Laptops (Windows)
Copy your important folders such as Documents, Desktop and Pictures to an external drive or a cloud service like Google Drive or OneDrive. For a complete copy, Windows' built-in backup and system image tool works well. Before you book a laptop repair, also note down any software licence keys and saved browser passwords.
MacBook and Mac
Use Time Machine with an external drive for a full backup, or copy key files to iCloud. If you are sending in a MacBook for repair, sign out of Find My Mac and your Apple ID so technicians can test it freely.
Phones
- iPhone: back up to iCloud, or to a computer via Finder or iTunes.
- Android: use Google One backup and copy photos to Google Photos.
Quick pre-repair checklist
- Backup completed and verified by opening a few files
- Screen lock or device passcode shared if testing is needed
- Find My or activation lock switched off
- SIM and memory card removed
