How to Clean Your Laptop Safely

Cleaning your laptop the wrong way can cause real damage. Learn how to safely clean the screen, keyboard, and vents, plus what you should never do.

A clean laptop runs cooler, lasts longer, and is simply nicer to use every day. But cleaning it the wrong way can scratch the screen, push dust deeper inside, or even let moisture reach the electronics — so here's how to do it safely at home, step by step.

Before you start

Always switch the laptop off, unplug it, and remove the charger first. Work in good light on a clean table. You'll need a soft microfibre cloth and, if possible, a can of compressed air. Avoid kitchen tissues and rough cloths, which can leave scratches.

Cleaning the screen

The screen is delicate, so be gentle. Wipe it with a dry microfibre cloth in soft, straight strokes. For stubborn marks, lightly dampen the cloth with plain water — never spray liquid directly onto the screen. Don't press hard, as too much pressure can damage the display panel underneath.

Cleaning the keyboard and body

Turn the laptop upside down and tap gently to loosen crumbs. A short burst of compressed air clears dust from between the keys. Wipe the keys and outer body with a barely-damp cloth. Keep moisture well away from any gaps so nothing seeps inside.

What NOT to do

A few mistakes cause real damage, so please avoid these:

  • Never spray any liquid directly onto the laptop.
  • Don't use household cleaners, bleach, or alcohol on the screen.
  • Don't open the laptop yourself to clean the fan unless you know what you're doing.
  • Don't use a vacuum cleaner, which can create static and harm components.
  • Don't clean while it's switched on or charging.

When to get a professional internal clean

Surface cleaning keeps the outside tidy, but it can't reach the dust packed around the fan and heat sink inside. If your laptop runs hot, the fan is loud, or it has even started shutting down on its own, it needs a proper internal clean — opening it up, clearing the dust safely, and often applying fresh thermal paste. This is best left to trained hands so nothing gets damaged.
