A laptop that refuses to turn on is alarming, but it's often something minor. Before you panic, work through these checks.
1. check the charger and power
Confirm the wall socket works, the charger light is on, and the cable isn't damaged. A faulty charger or loose DC jack is one of the most common causes of "no power".
2. look for any light or sound
Any LED, fan noise or beep tells you the laptop is getting some power — useful information for diagnosis.
3. do a power drain
Unplug everything, remove the battery if it's removable, then hold the power button for 30 seconds. Reconnect and try again. This clears many stuck states.
4. try an external display
If the laptop sounds like it's on but the screen is black, connect an external monitor. If that works, the issue is the screen or display cable, not the whole laptop.
5. remove external devices
Unplug USB drives, dongles and SD cards — a faulty peripheral can stop a laptop booting.
6. listen for the hard drive / check for overheating
Repeated clicking or a hot, dusty laptop that shuts down points to a failing drive or overheating.
7. note any recent changes
Did it get dropped, get wet, or fail after an update? That helps a technician pinpoint the cause fast.
