A laptop that runs hot, sounds like a hairdryer, or shuts down on its own is trying to tell you something. In our Delhi NCR workshops, overheating is one of the most common problems we see — and the good news is that the causes are usually simple and fixable. Left alone, though, sustained heat slowly wears down the parts inside, so it pays to understand what's happening.
Why laptops overheat
Heat builds up when warm air cannot escape the chassis fast enough. Modern laptops are packed tightly, so even a small blockage in the airflow makes a big difference. The usual culprits are:
- Dust-clogged fans and vents — Delhi NCR dust collects fast and blocks airflow.
- Dried-out thermal paste — the paste between the processor and heat sink degrades over 2-3 years.
- Blocked exhaust — using the laptop on a bed, sofa, or pillow covers the vents.
- Heavy load — gaming, video editing, or too many browser tabs push the CPU hard.
Warning signs to watch for
Don't ignore these symptoms, as sustained heat shortens the life of your components:
- The base or keyboard feels very hot to touch.
- The fan runs loud and constant, even when idle.
- The laptop slows down (thermal throttling) or shuts off suddenly.
- You see a high temperature reading in monitoring software.
What you can try at home
Before booking a repair, a few simple habits can ease mild heating:
- Keep the laptop on a hard, flat surface so the vents stay fully open.
- Use a cooling pad if you game or do heavy work for long stretches.
- Close background apps and browser tabs you don't actually need.
- Gently blow out the side vents with a can of compressed air.
These steps help, but they only clear surface dust — they can't reach the muck packed deep around the fan.
When to get a cleaning or re-paste
If your laptop is over two years old, or the fan is still loud after a surface clean, it usually needs an internal cleaning and fresh thermal paste. This means opening the laptop, clearing dust from the fan and heat sink, and applying new high-quality paste. Done correctly, it can drop temperatures by a noticeable margin and bring the noise right down. We recommend leaving this to trained hands, as fans and heat pipes are delicate.
